180 days have passed. The culprits involved in the July 15 attack on The Arunachal Times associate editor Tongam Rina are still at large.

Pasighat to become state’s HRD hub:Tuki

PASIGHAT, Dec 11: Riding upon the historic development – beginning of the first university of Arunachal Pradesh – Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today prophesied that Pasighat, the grand old town of the state, would one day become Arunachal’s hub of human resource development.

Addressing a mega Congress rally here this morning, Tuki said that Pasighat would always be written in golden letters when the history of Arunachal Pradesh is mentioned.

Earlier in the day, he had laid the foundation stone of the first university to be owned and managed by the state under an Act passed recently by the State Legislative Assembly.

“Our first college – Jawaharlal Nehru College (JNC) – was established in Pasighat years ago and still running strong. A horticulture college is also here…. and with an Agriculture College coming up in the next couple of years, Pasighat is all set to become the center of human resource development for our state,” he said.

Citing the first ever state university – in principle named as Arunachal University – as a pet project of the state government, Tuki assured a sum of Rs 20 crores for its infrastructure development in the first phase.

Our Correspondent adds: According top priority to agriculture and horticulture sectors in the state, Tuki announced bonanza for development of Pasighat area. Tuki said that his government is taking step to boost rural economy through enhanced agriculture, horticulture activity and implementation of rural development schemes besides creation of employment avenues. He said that the government, through Chief Minister’s Agricultural Mechanization Program is providing 50 percent subsidy for procurement of tractor, power tiller and other machineries.

Reiterating some developmental initiative taken by the state government, Tuki disclosed that an amount of Rs 5 crore has been estimated for development of tea and rubber cultivation in the state this year and more fund would be poured in the next years.

He said the government, observing high rate production of citrus fruits in Siang belt, is inviting local entrepreneurs for setting up of fruit processing industry.

The chief minister further said his government is taking welfare schemes for the women and youths. The government is planning to employ as many as one lakh youths during the 12th plan and about 10,000 employments will be created within the current year. It has increased honorarium of the Gaon Burahs from Rs 250 to Rs 500. He also urged the parents to guide their children on right way.

Tuki assured to grant Rs 3 crore for improvement of water supply system in century-old Pasighat town. He also assured to grant fund for installation of CT scanner at Pasighat General Hospital, strengthening of police force and fire brigade at Pasighat, Rs 1 crore for development and beautification of Amusement Park at Panekorong and additional fund of Rs 1 crore for completion of JN College girl’s hostel building.

Talking about Pasighat Air field, the chief minister informed that about Rs 134 crore has already been sanctioned. According to him, the Centre initially sanctioned Rs 100 crore for infrastructure development of the State University at Pasighat and it may require around Rs 600 crore for its fulfillment.

Addressing the Congress workers, Tuki urged them to work united for strengthening the party at grassroots level. Referring the Prime Minister’s massive development package for the state during 2008, he exhorted the party cadres to tighten belts to capture power at the Centre as well as in the state in the next elections.

Speaking on the occasion, Pasighat East MLA cum Education Minister Bosiram Siram placed the standing problems of the area before the chief minister and sought early solution of the people’s problem.

Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering said that he is cherishing a lot of hopes for the people of Arunachal. Stressing unified efforts for his dreams come true, he requested the party workers to turn their mandate towards Congress party during next parliamentary election.

Lok Sabha Member Takam Sanjoy, who never minces his words, called ‘spade a spade’ and asserted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition party, has not much role to play in the lives and politics of Arunachal.

“Many promising leaders may start from the opposition but in the long run they come into the Congress fold. That proves the credibility of the Congress!” he observed.

Sanjoy also gave a piece of his mind to anti-dam protagonists. Referring to a demand for solving the recurring power crisis in the township, he expressed confusion ‘what actually the people wanted’.

“On one hand you agitate for lack of power and on the other hand you agitate against producing power!” he said.

Asserting hydro power as the only way out for resource and employment avenue-crunch state, Sanjoy appealed the anti-dam agitators to make up their minds and think rationally. He also appealed them to put their grievances in front of the government and talk straight-face but with logic keeping in mind the overall welfare and development of the state.

The mega Congress rally was also addressed by Parliamentary Secretary for Education J K Panggeng and attended by legislators, Padi Richo, Ralom Borang, Bamang Felix and Alo Libang besides other leaders.

Later, the CM laid the foundation stone of Amusement Park at Panekorong.

Later in the afternoon, the CM declared the 13th Tadar Tang Memorial State Level Football Tournament open amidst mammoth gathering of dignitaries, veteran footballers and soccer lovers of Pasighat at General Ground.

In his inaugural speech, the Chief Minister said the tournament would provide a platform to show the hidden talents of the budding players and also learn from each other. It would also foster unity, brotherhood and help inculcate discipline in them. The real winner is one who accepts defeat gracefully and strive to do better, he added. Tuki informed that the present government is also giving special attention on sports and ten percent would be reserved in police service for talented sportsmen. International level achievers would be awarded with cash prizes of twenty five lacs upto one crore in the field of sports and athletics, he said.

The Capital Complex team won the inaugural match defeating East Siang team by 2-1 goal. Moge Lollen and Tamuk Taja of Capital Complex scored one goal each while Minto Peyang of East Siang netted one.

Reportedly, 10 teams are taking part in the tournament and the final math will be held on January 20 next. (With inputs from DIPRO and CM’s Media cell)

City police statement an absolute eye wash: APC, APUWJ

ITANAGAR, Jan 11: The Arunachal Press Club (APC) and Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) termed the statement given by capital police in regards to Tongam Rina shooting case as an absolute eye wash.

In a release, both the press bodies stated that police had never given priority to the case.

“When the AAPSU election process was going on, a person was arrested at Harmuti by Assam police in regards to Jumkar Basar murder case and Assam media had initially reported about alleged involvement of same person in the shooting case. On hearing this when press persons called up police officers, they specifically told us that everyone was busy for AAPSU election. How can SP Capital claim that police has accorded highest importance to this case?” the two organizations questioned.

While police claims of monitoring the case on daily basis, they only met Rina thrice in the last six months. They met her a day after she was shot and once after she was released from hospital. Of the three meetings, one was held only after she got in touch with the City Police Chief, they added.

The APC and APUWJ also questioned why was the information on receipt of the letter from CBI refusing to investigate the case was not relayed to either the press bodies or Rina. The press bodies and Rina had sought information from SP Capital many times but he never informed anyone.  In the last six months until the survivor or press bodies approaches, the police on their part never took initiative to update about the case to either Rina or press bodies, the statement added.

The SP Capital in his release had claimed that “as per record and information available there is no prima-facie involvement of any powerful people in this case.” As per the statement, it seems that police know who are involved, as they are dismissing involvement of powerful people and it would be great relief if they share with us what they know, the APC and APUWJ stated. The two organizations also expressed fear that evidence of the case must have been tampered by now.

“We know City Police have many cases in their hands but we would also want to know what is going on in regards to Rina case. Giving press statements without cross checking ground realities is not going to do any good to the police department,” the two press bodies stated.

Kaso suggests fresh idea for four-lane capital road

Staff Reporter

ITANAGAR, Jan 11: While welcoming the proposal for a four-lane road between Banderdewa to Hollongi as part of the PM’s package, Itanagar legislator Techi Kaso has suggested a novel way to the GoAP to avoid massive dismantling of buildings along the existing double-lane road for widening the  road as apprehended by the people.

“Saanp bhi more, lathi bhi na tute,” Kaso said in his indomitable way to develop the road through a new route without causing much losses and inviting the people’s wrath.

The four-lane road from Lekhi village could be linked to Borum-Sod-Papu and turn to Juli road-Chimpu to link with the main road opposite the road to Sange Lhaden Sports Academy, Kaso said today.

Through this innovative way, the GoAP could avoid massive damages to properties along the existing NH 52 A between Itanagar and Naharlagun, Kaso said, adding senior citizens and various sections of people of the Capital Complex have also endorsed his views.

Kaso along with Capital Complex DC Sanjay Goel and ADM Talo Potom today inspected the encroached Chandra Nagar police beat house besides Ganga market Hanuman temple in connection with the development of the four-lane. Terming the rising traffic congestion of the Capital Complex a nagging problem, the local MLA advocated that the existing NH should be developed as a double-lane road with a divider after clearing the required encroachment from the right of way. This would be a great relief from traffic congestion and serve as an alternate route for the four-lane, he added.

Sanjoy mulls Maoists hand behind anti-dam movement

Correspondent

PASIGHAT, Jan 11: Member of Parliament from Arunachal-West constituency Takam Sanjoy today contemplated involvement of Maoist extremists with the ongoing movement against construction of hydro-power dams in Arunachal rivers and thereby trying to halt the developmental process.

Addressing a public rally at Pasighat bazaar today, Sanjoy recalled that the Maoists link with anti-dam protestors. He said that Maoist link with the anti-dam movement was established as some jailed Maoist leaders admitted the truth.

Stating that hydropower projects are boon for the land-locked state, Sanjoy opined that the protesting organizations barred from developmental concept are hitting on the developmental process. He lamented that the protesting organizations are not coming forward to discuss the problems with the authority, but taking path of agitation against hydropower projects.

“The state government, by harnessing hydropower potentialities in the hilly rivers can enrich the state’s coffer and accelerate the developmental process. It is very unfortunate that the protesting organizations demand adequate power supply in one hand and opposing construction of hydropower projects on the other hand”, said MP Sanjoy while adding that both the demands can be considered as “superficial”. Sanjoy claimed that some leaders of the state are painting political colour on the hydropower issues. Stating that state government has difficulty to procure adequate power from outsides, he appealed the protesting organizations to hold dialogue for amicable solution of the problem.

National Youth Day

By Tapas Dutta,

In 1984, the Government of India declared and decided to observe the birthday of Swami Vivekananda (12 January, according to English calendar) as National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards. To quote from the Government of India's Communication, ''It was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.''

Swamij's Birthday according to Indian Almanac (Vishuddha Siddhanta Almanac) is on Pausha Krishna Saptami tithi, which falls on different dates of English Calendar every year.

The Headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission as well as their branch centres observe the birthday of Swami Vivekananda with mangalarati, special worship, homa, meditation, devotional songs, religious discourses, sandhyarati, etc. on Pausha Krishna Saptami tithi, and as National Youth Day  (12 January) with processions, speeches, recitations, music, youth conventions, seminars, Yogasana presentation, competitions in essay-writing, music, sports, etc. on 12 January.

January 12th of every year is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda who strived hard towards nation building and whose teachings were a foremost motivation to many philosophers and national leaders. His philosophy and teaching has said to motivate many great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose and many more. This year it is much more special as the nation is celebrating 150th birth anniversary of this great nationalistic monk.

Swami Vivekananda always believed in the power and the dreams of the youth and he wanted every youth of the country to encourage and nourish the historical culture of the nation as well as bring about advancement in them according to the changing modernization. His philosophy was a mixture of both spirituality and science. He gave a rational thinking to many of his ideas and thoughts. Such thinking motivated the youth since they could relate and logically align themselves to his thoughts.

Swami Vivekananda was a turning point in the modern history of India and the world, and he did trigger a new spiritual wave. The nationwide celebration of the iconic figure’s 150th birth anniversary this year should become a second turning point, expediting the process of change that he initiated over a century ago. An observation made by Vivekananda over 100 years ago is to the fore again now. “In India there are two great evils — trampling on women and grinding of the poor... There is no hope for the rise of that family or nation where there is no estimation of women or where they live in sadness,” he wrote. (The contributor of the article is Assistant Commissioner, Department of Tax & Excise, Itanagar)

Involve women in disaster management

Over half of the 200 million people affected by disasters each year were female, according to the head of the UN office for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlström. She called on women and girls to take leadership in disaster management in a world where disasters are on the rise  and further said that  the best disaster recovery programmes in the world involve women who have survived such events.

“If we are to build true disaster resilience we need to put the emphasis on their greater involvement before disasters strike.”

Women are responsible for many of the key strategic decisions of daily life. In many parts of the world this includes securing food, water and energy. They have real impact when they are fully involved in community planning for disaster risk reduction.

She said “We have learned from implementation of the existing agreement, the Hyogo Framework for Action, that national planning for disaster relief and recovery often excludes considerations of gender-based vulnerability and risks. One important remedy is to empower more women and girls to engage as volunteers and develop careers in disaster management.”

Saluting a Visionary Ideal World Leader– Swami Vivekananda

Dr. Jayadeba Sahoo

A regal, majestic figure of commanding presence, vast learning and deep insight, Swami Vivekananda was barely 30 years old when he created a stir at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Three and a half years later, when he returned to India, his homeland, it was as a colossus of strength, courage, confidence, love and manliness – the embodiment of the ideal of the ‘man-making and character-building’ education he propagated. The 19th century India produced a galaxy of great men who have enriched our national life by their talent and personality. Swami Vivekananda was one of them.

Swami Vivekananda : Life and Teachings

Swami Vivekananda, known in his pre-monastic life as Narendra Nath Datta, was born in an affluent family in Kolkata on 12 January 1863. His father, Vishwanath Datta, was a successful attorney with interests in a wide range of subjects, and his mother, Bhuvaneshwari Devi, was endowed with deep devotion, strong character and other qualities. A precocious boy, Narendra excelled in music, gymnastics and studies. By the time he graduated from Calcutta University, he had acquired a vast knowledge of different subjects, especially Western philosophy and history. Born with a yogic temperament, he used to practise meditation even from his boyhood, and was associated with Brahmo Movement for some time.

It’s rather easy saying than doing. One can guide you through tough times suggesting you, help you to live with the ills and odds that life keeps in store for you, teach you the difference between good and bad to go a long way up, but very few personalities can go to an extent of molding their life as an example to their inheritors. One such phenomenal person is our reverent Swami Vivekananda. No wonder the competence behind his conceptions has driven today’s youth to celebrate his birthday, the 12th of January, 150th anniversary this year.

“I am a viscid admirer of Swami Vivekananda. Every year I make it sure to spend time in Rama Krishna Math on his birthday which is now being celebrated as National Youth day. I find no other way to express my gratitude to this legend, for his words showed me a right route when I was almost balled up”, shares Naureen Tabassum, a medical student from Gandhi, while Sirisha Rathod from NIFT chunks, “I very often forget my incumbency as a civilian, just like any other young selfish fella. This place here (Rama Krishan Math) succors me in dipping myself into the holy feeling of being bounded.”

Commemorations are generally celebrated to remember a person, who is no more but is still loved. But few like him are memorized for their outstanding service to Indian ideas whose yearly observance deserves a lot more. Many ideas of his have only been confined to sayings and were hardly ever followed. On an average most of the students say they adore the words of Vivekananda, how far are that true, is indeed a personal question.  “Swami Vivekananda is my role model. His preachings are worth admiration but the application part is the real question. Motivation he induced is afresh. I thought giving them a try but failed to shadow them because somewhere they involve pluck which is a social issue all over again”, regrets Nishita Taduri from BVRIT.

Few Populace have experienced the facts that have been out through Vivekananda long before but the hesitation to jab them and moralize them is quite vivid today. “Society plays a vital role directly and indirectly in a person’s life. Even if one stabs to take a positive direction, efforts to moralize themselves, they fail to sustain optimism due to the society. ‘Be good, the rest just follows’ is an old saying. Live with the society, walk in the path it walks in, else you’ll not even know that you are lost the moment you started to take a different path, all alone. Swami Vivekananda’s propaganda’s are ideal but are hardly valid to the society at present” remorses Karthik Shah an adherent of Vivekananda, when surveyed why people defer to comply his sermons after knowing they are right.

He was a man who went across nations spreading knowledge. He was a man who was more respected around the world than here in India. The Vivekananda Vedanta society of Chicago which was set up to real the twin ideals of realizing god within and serving god in man holds one of the examples for the following Swami Vivekananda has. It’s an irony that people are honored better after their loss rather than when they are around us. Divine souls always have their place reserved in history irrespective of others visions and perceptions.

He was the first to define the essence of education. It was he who made the stand of youth powerful, in fact a meaningful one. Educational Institutions today are named after Vivekananda in reverence but none really knows if they are precisely following his ideas.  ‘Education with knowledge is important; Strive for Excellence, success becomes your trademark before you even think of it’  is what he deemed in and now the very institutions train students to compete for marks in the name of success though they put up a distinct mask in public, of course for public. “People respect him, they love his teachings, they accept the fact that his thoughts make one a perfect person, yet they fail to inculcate them, its sad that simple things seem to be so complicated these days”, mumbles Gaddam Puneet from TRR.

“I have seen 13 batches from our school in my experience. 10th standard has been the last platform where the students give a serious thought about their liability towards nation, as we motivate them to the best where Swami Vivekananda’s preachings play a vital role. Once they step out from here they say, they hardly have time for themselves and so anticipating dedication towards nation must be a bigger expectation” recounts Rev. Sister John Paul the Ex-Principal of St. Anthony’s Girls High School. It’s not easy to suddenly start following the teachings of the great man, but surely the desire to change can initiate it. Out of hours and hours of surfing in the internet dedicating a few minutes to sites like http://www.vedantasociety-chicago.org can help a lot in ones development , proving the fact that there are people walking in the light the man left behind.

“His ideas were simple, but true. They initiate success in life. They were all about love, knowledge, truth. He believed that purity, patience, and perseverance are three essentials to success. His views about a religion were different; it is oneness, unlike today’s religion which has become a point of fight. Many social organizations have been started to keep his preaches and principles alive.  http://www.sevalaya.org/ in Chennai and http://www.spiritualbangalore.com/spiritual-organizations/vivekananda-kendra-yoga-research-foundation/ in Bangalore are the few sites of the social organizations committed to Swami Vivekananda’s sermons.

When youth say they respect his ideas, why is there no room for patriotism? Why is this generation dreaming of life abroad? Why not India?

“When it comes to beliefs and orations, patriotism and stuff sound diplomatic, good. But they are too tedious in everyday life. All of us like boasting in public about patriotism, progress, oneness, keeping them in practice is impractical. Unless their financial position doesn’t support them, why would anyone prefer to strive in India when there are several other options offering us better lives abroad?” question’s Amay Setty from DVR.

“Its fortunate for him that Swami Vivekananda is not between us today. This world would have changed him literally, or even otherwise, we would have his ideas, his teachings and philosophy confined only to writings on the walls”, opines Roobella Subash from SVIT.

This is a wireless generation. Western culture has not only influenced youngsters but has become an essential part of their life. Rather than passion for progress, its love for non-yielding sophistication we witness at present. But was this Vivekananda had striven for? Selfish at times, has been associated with today’s generation, but isn’t that totally different from the wise man’s ideas which said about helping others? In his words ‘They alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive.’  “I heard a lot about this man. His love for nation will be remembered till India survives on the world map. I adore him, respect him but his preaches cannot be practiced today the way they were expected to. Remembering him is all a man can do for now, to be precise” says Sindhu Machanna from Gitams.

If youngsters owe respect to the ideas of Vivekananda then let his birthday not be, only the birth anniversary of him but be a day of reckoning. If not, all the questions put across will go answer less, it does not go as a loss to the man but a casualty of youth today. After all its love and love alone that he preached, is missing today!

On this day, we gratefully remember the great Leader, who have made our life much more knowledgeable and fulfilled, as serving as our beacons of light. (The writer is a Faculty, Brahma Kumaris & Head, Dept. of Education, R.G.U.)
